What is the Internet of Things?
July 15, 2020Broadband Internet has become increasingly accessible, the cost of using it has reduced, more gadgets are being invented with GPS capabilities, and sensors and Wi-Fi are being added to them. These things are all creating a “perfect storm,” especially for the future of the Internet of Things. But what exactly does this mean?
Broadband Internet has been around for quite some time, but it’s only really taken off in the last decade or so. The first device I can think of that had internet capabilities was a dial-up modem. With the advent of the Internet, new and innovative devices have come out that allow for even more Internet access. It’s become a very complex and powerful tool in the lives of many people today.
The Internet itself is not the Internet of Things. It doesn’t even need to be. Some things that are “Internet of Things” may have the ability to connect to the Internet through other devices (like cellular phones or television sets), but it is only the Internet itself that is the Internet of Things.
What happens when everything becomes Internet of Things? It’s a phenomenon that will make the Internet of Things completely irresistible to everyone. In the future everyone will have access to information, but only information they want. A person could request their own cell phone ringtone or their own customized alarm clock for their own use. They will have the choice of having access to all their social network profiles and personal information. It’s almost like having their very own personal computer.
The problem we face now is that there are no standards or laws governing the Internet of Things yet. The companies that are creating products for Internet of Things are still not regulated at all. One company in particular, Philips, has taken full advantage of this fact by creating some of the most invasive monitoring programs available on the market today. Some people have reported being stalked and harassed through their cell phone. This is only one company who are using this type of software, and it’s only one example.
There is an organization called The Internet Security Alliance that has attempted to create such standards and regulations for Internet of Things and it has been going on for a while. Although there are no hard and fast rules to how Internet of Things should work, there is something that is certain. which we have to do as consumers: We have to have a say. and we have to be aware of the dangers of this emerging technology. If you’re considering using this new and exciting form of technology, we encourage you to speak up and get involved now.
